Areas We Cover within the Northeast

You likely searched for 'PAT Testing near me,' and it makes sense that you want a truly local company. That’s exactly who we are. While many companies claim to be local, they may not actually be based in the region. Our engineers work from their home locations, and our premises are in Billingham, Teesside.

We cover most of the North East region, usually within a 50 mile radius of Billingham. The majority of our work takes place in Teeside, with regular service in North Yorkshire and County Durham. For areas we don’t cover in Tyneside, we’re happy to recommend a trusted local PAT Testing company.

Whether you need testing for a single item or thousands, and whether you prefer to visit us or have us come to you (which is more common), simply reach out and we’ll arrange a convenient appointment.

FAQ's with regards to PAT testing (click the question to reveal answer)

    What Is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing, or Portable Appliance Testing, refers to the safety inspection of electrical equipment to ensure it’s safe for use. During the process, a qualified engineer conducts a visual inspection to identify visible defects. Once the equipment passes the visual check, we perform electrical tests to assess the internal wiring and other components to confirm it’s safe to use.

It's important to note that PAT Testing is different from electrical equipment testing. PAT Testing specifically applies to electrical devices with a plug.

This formal inspection, which includes both a visual check and electrical testing, is carried out by a competent professional at regular intervals, depending on the type of equipment and its working environment, to uphold safety standards.

    What is Electrical Equipment Testing?

Electrical Equipment Testing is often misunderstood as a new term for PAT Testing, but this is incorrect. PAT Testing hasn’t been replaced; it remains a specific type of safety check for portable appliances.

Electrical Equipment Testing is a broad term that covers all types of electrical inspections, whether the equipment has a plug or not. It includes various methods used to ensure the safety of electrical devices.

This category includes PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing), which checks plug-in devices for safety, and FAT (Fixed Appliance Testing), which is used for equipment hardwired into a building's electrical system.

    What Is A Portable Appliance?

A Portable Appliance refers to any electrical equipment that is capable of being moved while connected to the electrical supply via a plug and socket. These appliances are typically powered through a plug and can be unplugged and moved between locations easily.

  • Handheld devices (e.g., drills, hairdryers)

  • Moveable equipment (weighing less than 18kg, such as microwaves or vacuum cleaners)

  • IT equipment (like computers, printers, and monitors)

  • Larger equipment that can still be moved if necessary (like vending machines or photocopiers)

  • What Does The PAT Test Certificate Include?

The PAT Testing Certificate Report we provide contains all the essential information to support you in the event of an investigation.

Many other providers do not include detailed electrical test results, but without these, the report may not hold up in legal situations.

Our reports clearly detail each appliance’s ID (matching the label), a description of the item, its location, the name of the test engineer, the tests performed, and the results obtained.

Additionally, our reports include a record of any repairs made – a feature that sets us apart, as few companies offer this, yet it’s crucial for maintaining a thorough service log.

Do I Need A New Certificate If I Move Address?

If you move to a new address, your current PAT Testing Certificate will no longer be valid, as it will have the wrong location details.

It’s important to schedule a fresh inspection to ensure your equipment is still safe to use, especially in case any items were damaged during the move.

When Do You Issue The PAT Testing Certificate?

For existing clients, we provide PAT Testing Certificate Reports within 5 days of completing the job. For new clients, reports are issued within 2 days of receiving payment.

If you require the certificate on the same day, we can accommodate that request.

How Often Should I Get PAT Testing Carried Out?

The frequency of PAT testing depends on several factors, including:

  • Your Risk Assessment: This will help you determine the necessary steps to keep your equipment safe.

  • Fire Prevention Risk Assessment: This evaluates measures needed to prevent fire hazards.

  • Usage and Users of the Equipment: The frequency can vary based on how and by whom the equipment is used.

  • Working Environment: The conditions in which the equipment is used also play a role.

  • Type of Equipment: Different types of equipment may require varying testing intervals.

  • Insurance Requirements: Insurance policies often assume you’re meeting Health and Safety obligations.

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989: These regulations mandate that any equipment that could cause injury must be maintained in a safe condition. However, they don’t specify exact testing intervals or procedures, and neither do the HSE, to avoid legal liabilities.

  • While the regulations don’t prescribe specific intervals, many companies adopt an annual PAT testing schedule as it is widely recognized as best practice.
